Dielectric-electrolyte supercapacitors

Aqueous supercapacitors (SCs) are highly desirable as the next generation of energy storage devices, holding promise being environmentally friendly and free safety concerns. However, their low water-splitting voltage prevents practical applications. Here, we utilize a dielectric-polymer-coated, hierarchically structured carbon electrode to prepare dielectric-electrolyte SC (DESC), which exhibits an ultra-high stable operating 3 V. The facile design polymeric superstructure, covalently bonded upon porous electrode, allows electrolyte ions enter interact with but effectively blocks water molecules from entrance. In addition, dielectric layer could store electrical through polarization provide additional active sites for ion adsorption. Subsequently, density DESC is enhanced by over 1,000% compared traditionally SC. This work may pave new way producing low-cost eco-friendly aqueous SCs density.
